Hotel Kanra Kyoto, opened in 2010 and refurbished by UDS in 2017, brings a contemporary ryokan rhythm to a quiet pocket of Shimogyo five minutes from Kyoto Station. The 70 rooms are organised as machiya-style maisonettes with tatami sleeping areas, hinoki ofuro bathtubs, and double-height courtyards in the deluxe categories. Public spaces fold around an ikebana-decorated lobby and a kaiseki restaurant headed by chef Naoyuki Yamamoto. Walk-out access to the city's east-bound subway makes this the most practical design hotel in town.
