The owners of the highly regarded Gostilna AS in Ljubljana are behind this mountain retreat, a striking modernist structure set on the hillside above the Julian Alpine village of Gozd Martuljek. Chalet Sofija offers just five suites, each named after one of the owners’ grandchildren. They range from the lavish Suite Izabela, with its panoramic views and 60 square meters of space, to the extraordinary Presidential Suite Izak, whose expansive outdoor terrace nearly doubles its already generous footprint. Luxurious as the accommodations are, they’re only part of the experience. As you’d expect from restaurateurs of this caliber, Chalet Sofija places equal emphasis on its gourmet restaurant, where the chef-owner personally commands the open kitchen in a dining room framed by distant mountain peaks.
