Costa del Sol glamour & yacht culture
Marbella is the most glamorous resort town on the Spanish coast — a 27-kilometre stretch of the Costa del Sol that has attracted Europe's wealthy since the 1950s, when Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened the Marbella Club and established the template for Mediterranean luxury that the town has refined ever since. The Golden Mile, the stretch of coast between Marbella and Puerto Banús, remains the most concentrated address of luxury hotels, private villas, and beach clubs in Spain.
Puerto Banús, the marina village developed in 1970 by José Banús, is the social centre of Marbella's luxury scene — a harbour of superyachts, designer boutiques, and restaurants that draws the European jet set every summer. The Nobu Hotel Marbella, overlooking the marina, and the Marbella Club, on the Golden Mile, are the two most celebrated hotel addresses in the town.
Marbella's old town — a whitewashed Andalusian village of narrow streets, orange trees, and flower-filled plazas — offers a quieter, more authentic counterpoint to the glamour of the coast. The Plaza de los Naranjos, the historic centre, is one of the most beautiful squares in Andalusia and the best base for exploring the town on foot.
Marbella's beach clubs — Nikki Beach, Ocean Club, Puente Romano Beach Club — are the social heart of the summer season. Book a sunbed in advance for July and August; the best spots go weeks ahead.
The golf courses around Marbella — Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Los Naranjos — are among the finest in Europe. Green fees are highest in spring and autumn; summer is quieter and often discounted.
Marbella's restaurant scene has improved dramatically in the past decade. Skina in the old town (two Michelin stars) is the most celebrated restaurant in the region; Messina is the most creative.
May–October is Marbella's season, with July–August the peak. June and September offer the best combination of warm weather, full beach club season, and slightly lower rates. November–March is quiet and mild — good for golf but most beach clubs are closed.
For the most historic and most celebrated hotel on the Golden Mile, the Marbella Club — opened in 1954 by Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, the hotel that invented the Marbella lifestyle — is the definitive address.
For the most contemporary luxury experience overlooking Puerto Banús marina, the Nobu Hotel Marbella offers the best combination of design, dining, and proximity to the yacht scene.
